Hamish is our 20 year old black cat.

There is a photo of him in one of my posts somewhere on the forum.

There is @denby , under the Chiwoo Hoo thread. The photo is also included in the 'Recently Shared Images' section at the bottom of the Home page.
I hope he's ok. What's he been up to?

Hamish went to the vet yesterday, he got his nails clipped and his teeth inspected. He was a very good boy in his cage and he purred when the vet did his nails. Today he seems to be walking on air. Good boy eh!

The vets are discussing his teeth today, he might be too old to be put under for more dental work. Hope so.

Not to say cat-aclysmic. But could be quite cat-hartic.
Your turn @ArcaneCollector

Your puns have left me catatonic! Which is not a tonic for cats.

I thought about getting a cat since they are less maintenance than dogs.

If you believe that @MisterNoName , you'll believe anything! The only advantage in maintenance terms is that you don't need to take them for walks in the pouring rain. Also, depending on where you live, cats tend not to chase sheep. Anything else is pretty much fair game though.

I live in Virginia.

I always assumed once their trained on the litter box it is smooth sailing.

Aha, one of our US members. As I understand it, cats in the US are usually kept as indoor pets due to the savage wildlife. Over in the UK the cats are the savage wildlife. I have two of the little darlings, one of whom is my avatar: they are both litter trained, but both prefer to 'go' outside. They also both hunt and, while they do generally eat their catch (they don't touch the rats once they're dead, but they do bring them home), they would be up for bringing the bodies back to the house to eat in comfort - and blood and entrails aren't my chosen style of decor. That's why I don't have a cat door.
Inside, you'll need something for them to scratch to save your furniture from being demolished. Claw maintenance is very important to cats. They also love walking across keyboards; sitting on whatever you're reading; waking you up in the early hours just because they can, and demanding attention at the most inconvenient times. Never leave raw meat out unattended on an open worktop as it may well 'walk'. For some reason pre-chewed steak isn't seen as appetizing to humans.
Then there's the healthcare. Regular deworming and defleaing; vaccinations; neutering (please don't neglect this: cats don't miss the parts removed and it is much better for their health and happiness in the long run); repairing accidental damage and illness. Pet insurance is advisable: cats can develop diabetes, thyroid problems and heart disease, and I understand that vet's fees in the US can be eye watering. They can be over here too, but possibly not to the same extent.
I would strongly recommend that you look out some of the Jackson Galaxy videos on YouTube. He is a US person and his advice will likely be more relevant to you. He is also very knowledgeable and very humane.
Having said all that, they will worm their way into your heart like nothing else, and you'll soon be wondering how you ever managed without one, or two. Go for it @MisterNoName .

Nah. Just go for it, all the things don't happen at once, there's plenty of time to recover between bodies. Get down to your local shelter, you won't regret it.  Hamish my black cat! 1f63a  Hamish my black cat! 1f63a
